It is a wise idea to plan ahead in case of a pet emergency. You should know where you will take your pet, what hours veterinary services are available and what constitutes a pet emergency.
Ask your veterinarian if the practice offers a 24-hour service. If not, ask for a recommendation of a local emergency clinic or a number to call in case of emergency. Keep this emergency number readily available.
As a general rule, you should prepare to take your pet to the emergency clinic if they :
- suffer a trauma such as a fall or accident,
- are poisoned,
- are choking,
- have a heatstroke,
- experience a negative reaction to an insect sting.
You should also take your pet to the emergency clinic if they :
- suffer a seizure,
- seem paralyzed,
- have difficulty breathing,
- experience excessive bleeding,
- lose consciousness,
- have rapid breathing,
- experience either a dramatically weak or rapid pulse.
Before taking your pet to the emergency room :
- carefully place the pet in an open box or kennel, making sure to use a blanket or towel around the pet’s head to protect yourself from possible biting.
- if your pet is choking, try to remove the object from your pet’s throat with your fingers. If you can’t remove the object, try a sharp rap to the chest to free the object.
- have someone call ahead so the veterinarian can expect you and your pet’s arrival.
