It is heartbreaking to lose a pet. Shelters contain many dogs and cats who have been separated from their families. A satisfying solution to this situation is the microchip.
Micro-Chipping is a procedure that takes place in the veterinarian’s office. A small electronic chip, about the size of a grain of rice, is injected into the loose skin between your pet’s shoulder blades with a 12 gauge needle. Local anesthetic can be used to insure that your pet will not feel pain. The procedure is quick. Recovery time is immediate. Your pet will be ready to leave as soon as the regular exam is over.
The procedure is relatively inexpensive and lasts the life of your pet. After the microchip is inserted, you will register the microchip’s number and your contact information into a national data base for lost pets. The microchip is not a GPS system. It will not locate your pet. However, if you pet is lost, a veterinarian or pet shelter will be able to run a scanner over your pet’s shoulders. This will give them the microchip identification number and with this, they will be able to access your telephone number and address. There is a possibility that a microchip can migrate from the point of insertion. The vet can check several times to make sure that the microchip stays in place. You can also feel the microchip, like a rice grain, under your pet’s skin. Our office can provide microchipping for your pet and answer any questions about the procedure you may have.Your vet can also check on the location of the microchip each time you visit the office.
