Euthanasia

It is never an easy decision to euthanize a pet. However when a pet’s quality of life diminishes because of pain or disease, euthanasia is an option.

It is advisable to talk to your veterinarian about euthanasia before the time arrives. You can receive guidelines to help you evaluate when the time is right. Here are some indicators of pet health that you can monitor :

  • Responsiveness to being called or petted.
  • Ability to walk.
  • Amount of food consumed.
  • Amount of water consumed.
  • Amount of urination and defecation.
  • Pet’s weight.
  • Pain exhibited by crying, aggression, or panting.
  • Resting breaths per minute.
  • Worsening or improving signs of disease.

Euthanasia in the veterinarian’s office is administered by injection. The injection solution is only available to licensed veterinarians. The fast-acting injection allows for your pet to completely relax. After just a few seconds your pet will appear to be in a deep sleep and then shortly, take its last breath.

You can decide how you want the euthanasia to proceed. You can schedule an appointment. You can request to be with your pet when the injection is administered. You can plan ahead what you want done with your pet’s body. The veterinarian will give you the body if you want to bury it. You can also request the body be cremated and receive the ashes.

It is a good idea to discuss euthanasia with your family. It is also a good idea to have a support system on the day of the euthanasia procedure.
