Hearing Problems

Pets can experience a range of hearing problems, from temporary hearing loss to deafness.

Temporary hearing loss can be caused when there is a build-up of wax in the ear canals. Certain breeds with narrow ear canals or dogs with excessive hair around the ears can be prone to this wax build-up. A foreign object in the ear can also cause loss of hearing. Both of these conditions can be treated by a veterinarian.

Permanent hearing loss can have many causes. It can be a result of old age, an untreated ear infection, drug toxicity, injury or genetic problem.

A veterinarian exam will determine the cause of your pet’s hearing loss. Treatment might be a prescriptive ear wash, removal of hair from the ears, or medication to treat ear infection.

Permanent hearing loss, however, is irreversible. Pets with permanent hearing loss require special care. Your veterinarian will have advice on how to communicate with a deaf pet and how to keep them safe.
