Gastrointestinal Problem

 
There are several digestive disorders that can bother pets. Fortunately, early treatment in the veterinarian’s officeis usually effective. Contact your veterinarian if your pet exhibits vomiting or diarrhea, loss of weight, abdominal bloating, and constipation.

A pet with allergy and skin disease may exhibit one or more of the following symptoms.

Some Common GI Conditions :

Pancreatitis — more common in female dogs, older dogs, frequently found in Miniature Schnauzer, Miniature Poodle, and Cocker Spaniel breeds.

Symptoms :

  • fever
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • dehydration
  • fatigue and sluggishness
  • abdominal pain
  • lethargy
  • accelerated heart rate
  • laboured breathing

Causes :

  • obesity
  • fatty foods
  • scorpion venom

Treatment :

  • fluid therapy
  • electrolyte supplements
  • potassium supplements
  • restricted exercise

Canine Coronavirus

This infection can be very harmful to puppies that become severely dehydrated with diarrhea.

Symptoms :

  • fever
  • vomiting
  • depression
  • refusal to eat
  • diarrhea
  • dehydration

Causes :

  • intestinal virus that affects cats
  • stress
  • overcrowded, unsanitary conditions
  • places and events where there are a large number of dogs

Treatment :

  • antibiotics if the infection in adult dogs continues 12 days
  • careful monitoring of puppies who might require IV injections.
  • a preventative vaccine is available from the veterinarian.

Inflammatory Bowel Disorder

Symptoms :

  • chronic, large bowel diarrhea
  • large amount of feces and mucus
  • constipation
  • abdominal pain
  • bloating
  • vomiting

Causes :

  • abnormal colonic myoelectric activity
  • fiber deficiency
  • diet
  • stress

Treatment :

  • high fiber diet
  • low stress environment
